The twisted side of spiral staircases

Germans must love spiral staircases – they’re everywhere!

Although I find them aesthetically pleasing, they are a nightmare in practical terms – trust me I have one at home.

These are just a few spiral staircases I found around Darmstadt. I probably would’ve found more if it wasn’t so cold, and walking around wasn’t so unpleasant.

Germany: There were two, now there is one

Written on THE WALL : “Du hast gelernt was Freiheit heisst, und das vergiss nie mehr” – You have learned what freedom means and that you shall forget no more.

Today is the anniversary of the reunification of Germany. Berlin still stands as a symbol of the once divided Germany with what is left of the WALL that separated East  and West Berlin. But the whole of Germany was separated not just Berlin, in fact, West Berlin was a little island of “Western Germany” in “Eastern Germany” – yes it was that crazy!

Here are some of my favourite pictures of Berlin.

The bizarre experience of watching the BBC Wallander… also on German telly!

Last week I found myself watching another episode of Wallander – originally a Swedish TV series, that was reproduced by the BBC with British actors. The story is the same as the Swedish original, it is filmed in Sweden, and basically it’s like if it was the original but with British actors speaking English (so for example, if they are reading an email, it shows up written in Swedish, although they read it out-loud in English). Well, its strange and funny, but you grow to love it. However, I have now the added bizarre value of having to watch it dubbed in German…. 🙂

Weekend Plans: Trip to Kassel, home of the dOCUMENTA

I’m excited to go to Kassel this weekend. This time it’s just a short day trip to see my cool friends from Kassel. I lived there for a short time in 2001, and coincidentally that year was also a year of the dOCUMENTA – a massive art exhibition that takes place every 5 years. I really enjoyed living there, there was lots of things happening as part of this art show, and the city is generally a cool place to be.

Last year I visit the dOCUMENTA again and I was quite taken by these portraits by a South African artist – Zanele Muholi

Happy Weekend! Any nice plans?

Cafe culture

Germany is all about Cafe culture. Just sitting around drinking coffee and eating cake… there could be worse things then that! Today I’ll join the locals and will sit around and have coffee and cake…

Also, on a kind of related note, I have put together a mini guide to Darmstadt, check it out here.

Happy Sunday everyone 🙂

The power is up…

My commute to work is shorter now, which is nice on the one hand, but on the other hand I don’t really have time to read or do anything interesting…

This week I noticed how cool all the power cables on my commuting route actually are. In the UK the power is on the train tracks, and in winter the train schedules always get affected if the tracks get too cold or too wet, here the power is up, so I am hoping there will be less drama in winter….

How do you get to work? Do you have to commute too?

be afraid…be very afraid…

Only joking!!! no need to be afraid its only an old castle….

Only 5 km from Darmstadt there’s the world famous Burg Frankenstein, that may have inspired Mary Shelley’s book. I, of course, read the book in my teens when I was going through a pseudo goth phase, and was fascinated by all things dark and scary… Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, like the original Bram Stoker’s Dracula, were however really disappointing! they were not scary at all, and actually really boring to read.

Anyway, the castle it’s an interesting day trip if you’re in the area. The other cool thing is that the city of Darmstadt holds their civil service ceremonies in the castle’s small chapel – this is definitely a cool place to get married…
