or the concept of mental time travel….

I recently come across an article that explores the concept of mental time travel, where you can have anticipated nostalgia. Cheung (2023) describes anticipated nostalgia as “linked to stronger appreciation of the present and efforts to savor current events for future recollections by engaging in activities that help to preserve their memories (e.g., taking photographs, purchasing items with nostalgic potential)”.
Is it strange the idea of mentally travel to the future to look back to the past? I understand it as an exercise in creating memories. We hold on to the special moments so we can look back at them in the future.
Although, I sometimes like to think of myself as a free and detached person. In reality I also hold on to special objects, books, and even clothing that have special meaning to me… It turns out I am quite nostalgic!
